Equipment You Need To Start Bicycle Commuting

Commuting by bicycle is a great way to get exercise, to save money, and to help the environment. More and more people are starting to ride their bikes to work, and bike infrastructure is improving with the increase in bike popularity.

But what do you need to make the switch to bicycle commuting? If you’re looking to trade your car for a bike—or at least leave your car in the garage a few times per week—you only need a few basic necessities

Have a bike?

Obviously, you will need a bike before you can start bicycle commuting. But is a top-of-the-line carbon road bike necessary for the beginning commuter?

No. If you already have a bike in your garage, it is likely that your bike will be adequate while you’re starting out. If you don’t own a bike, check websites such as Craigslist for deals on used bikes. Once you have a bike, consider taking it to a local bicycle store for a basic tune-up to replace rusty or worn parts, adjust the brakes and wheels, and perform any additional necessary maintenance.

A safe bicycle helmet is a must for all bike commuters, not just beginners. Wearing a helmet can be the difference between life and death (or severe injury), so it makes sense to spend a bit more on a helmet than you would on other items.

Before purchasing a helmet, make sure it is made specifically for bicycling. Try it on.Though many helmets are adjustable, you want to have the closets fit for maximum safety. Only buy a brand new helmet. Since helmets are not as effective after a crash, you need to know for certain that there is no damage to the helmet from any prior owner.
