To find out whether the effect was solely due to the caffeine in the green tea, they gave an equivalent amount of pure caffeine to a control group of volunteers. The caffeine was not as effective as the green tea extract at speeding up metabolism.

The metabolism-boosting effect of green tea is thought to be due to chemicals called polyphenols that are found in this type of tea. These chemicals influence the way the liver works to break down fat.

Drinking green tea can also have other positive health benefits as it is rich in antioxidants; some nutrition researchers think that these chemicals might help to prevent cancer.

2. Ginger

The same 1988 study also investigated the metabolism-boosting effects of ginger. Ginger can slightly speed up metabolism, and it also has other health benefits such as reducing nausea and keeping the digestive system running smoothly.
