Supplements For Athletes

There are a few types of supplements that every athlete should take. Why?

Because they work, and they can work for everyone if they are used correctly. More specifically, there are two necessary supplements for any athlete. Every athlete should take a multi-vitamin. Every day. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. It’s simple. Wake up, have a balanced meal, and then take a once-daily multivitamin and wash it down with a glass of water.

Athletes should be eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet to begin with, but it is next to impossible to get all of the vitamins and minerals one needs from food alone. A decent, once-daily multivitamin can be purchased for cheap at a grocery store or a pharmacy.

Take whey protein immediately after training

Drinking a protein shake, however, is not a replacement for a meal. A scoop of powdered whey protein will simply not provide the same amount of energy and nutrients that a steak or an omelet, for example, will provide. But, most protein supplements are only 150 to 200 calories and typically provide between 20 and 30 grams of protein.

One can get these amounts of protein easily in a meal, but it is important to look at the amino acid profile of whey protein. Amino acids are the “building blocks” that make up the protein. Whey protein contains extremely high amounts of the essential amino acids Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine that the body uses for muscle repair and growth.

Whey protein is not just for weightlifters and bodybuilders!

A two hour long sports practice will cause the muscles used in physical activity to break down slightly. Simply drinking a whey protein shake immediately after will help an athlete’s body recover from the stress of a workout, practice or competition.
These two supplements are proven to help athletes reach their fullest potential, but supplements are only one part of the equation. After all, the word “supplement” means “something added to complete a thing.” The multivitamin and whey protein should be added to a balanced, nutritious diet for best results.
