How To Strict Press Correctly With Mike James

The overhead press, or the “strict press” as it’s also commonly known, is one of the quintessential weight-lifting exercises. The deadlift, the squat, the bench press and the strict press are really all you need to get strong and shredded, but only if you do them correctly.

Fortunately, a YouTube channel by the name of Barbell Brigade posted a very insightful and educational video on the matter, explaining in detail how to perform the strict press correctly. Some people argue that proper technique involves standing with the bar on your shoulders as your starting position.

You can choose to do this or you can keep the bar just a bit above your shoulders, but make sure that you lock your elbows and keep them out in front. Keep your body as tight as possible and screw your feet into the floor, generating torque through the legs, tighten the quads and glutes and lift up.

The purpose of the exercise is to move the barbell straight up. If you want to know more about this exercise, check out the video below. Mike does a great job at simplifying the lift enough so that even beginners can thoroughly understand how to perform the exercise.
