Almonds For Weight Loss

The Study

Experts have known for a long time that various nuts and seeds have a number of human health benefits. But studies now confirm that almonds in particular can help those people who are seeking to lose a few pounds.
It seems that people are always searching for that magic food that is low in calories and will reduce hunger. Not many foods fit that bill. And dieters have historically shied away from nuts because they are typically higher in fat and calories. But now there is good news that might put nuts namely, almonds back on the menu.
A study published in the International Journal of Obesity showed that almonds can, indeed, be eaten as part of a successful weight-loss program. In fact, almond-eaters experienced accelerated weight loss as compared to study participants that did not eat almonds.

The Details

The study was lead by Michelle Wien, Dr.P.H., R.D., and was conducted by putting two groups of diabetic, overweight individuals on similar calorie-restricted diets designed to promote weight loss. One group was instructed to supplement their diet with 3 ounces of raw or roasted almonds. The other group supplemented their base diet with the same number of calories from complex carbohydrates such as wheat crackers and popcorn. The diets were identical in calories, but they differed in fat content. The almond diet consisted of 39% total fat while the non-almond diet was a mere 18% total fat.
