5 Foods That Have A Positive Effect On Your Metabolism

Metabolism

The faster your metabolism, the more quickly your body burns off the calories you take in from food. These calories are used to power all the processes that your body needs to do during the day including pumping blood around your body, keeping you at a constant temperature and making your muscles do everything you need them to do. Here are five foods that could have a positive boosting effect on your metabolism

1. Green Tea

A study carried out by researchers at the University of Geneva has suggested that certain chemicals in green tea could have a positive effect on metabolism, and even help people to lose weight as a result. The researchers gave a green tea extract to healthy volunteers and measured various metabolic markers. They found that green tea promotes fat oxidation and raises metabolism.

To find out whether the effect was solely due to the caffeine in the green tea, they gave an equivalent amount of pure caffeine to a control group of volunteers. The caffeine was not as effective as the green tea extract at speeding up metabolism.

The metabolism-boosting effect of green tea is thought to be due to chemicals called polyphenols that are found in this type of tea. These chemicals influence the way the liver works to break down fat.

Drinking green tea can also have other positive health benefits as it is rich in antioxidants; some nutrition researchers think that these chemicals might help to prevent cancer.

2. Ginger

The same 1988 study also investigated the metabolism-boosting effects of ginger. Ginger can slightly speed up metabolism, and it also has other health benefits such as reducing nausea and keeping the digestive system running smoothly.
