1. Aspartame

First up is one of the worst food additives out there, aspartame.

Used primarily as an artificial sweetener in foodstuffs like diet sodas, tabletop sweeteners, yogurts and chewing gum, aspartame was first approved by the FDA in 1981. And in the years since, study after study has shown just how dangerous this chemical additive is. For instance, a 2012 study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that men who consumed one or more daily servings of aspartame-sweetened diet soda had twice the risk of developing lymphomas and multiple myelomas – both being types of cancer.
Additionally, the consumption of aspartame can be detrimental to brain health. As explained by the author of a 2011 report published in Positive Health, aspartame breaks down into a chemical called aspartate which, in large enough amounts, can poison and kill brain cells.
There have been many more medical journals and reports from credible sources that clearly outline just how damaging the long-term effects of this popular additive can be. Your best protection is to familiarize yourself with the products that use aspartame as a flavor enhancer, and vow never to let them enter your kitchen again.
